This role includes several places where text is to be spoken but Gershwin indicates very rough pitch by means of an x notehead on the stave. I have played these as written, just to illustrate the rhythm, but have occasionally changed accidentals to make a better match with the harmony. In any case, there is absolutely no requirement to hit an exact note in any of these places.
